Need Help With Picnic Ideas

Hi Everyone!!!
I am in charge of my DS's third grade class picnic in a couple of weeks. I need to come up with some outdoor games/activities that are fairly simple to set up. I only have half an hour for that part of the party. Does anyone have any creative ideas? I'm having picnic block (similar to writer's block(';-)'). Thanks for any suggestions you may have!!!

Perhaps put them to work looking for the various kinds of wildlife out there....

ETA..
I was always a kid who hated competitions like relay races...I liked more quiet types of things and I recall enjoying time I spent a little mutant identifying wildlife and drawing pictures of what I saw. ;-)

You could try a water balloon toss, but I'm hesitant to suggest that in case the kids get too rowdy with the water balloons. That would be quick to set up if you have the water balloons all made ahead of time.

I just was in charge of my kids field day on Friday and I had a 60 min block of games for 6-12 yo. This is what we did.

Relay race between 2 or 4 teams depending on the size of the class

Three legged race

Balloon Relay ( where each child has a balloon, they run to the cone sit on the balloon and run back to tag their team mate and so on until the entire team is done. First team done wins.)

This game is hoola hoop head. Two teams. Make two lines having the children holding each others hand outstretched and together. Place a hoola hoop around the first childs head. They must pass it onto the next childs neck without breaking hands with each other. No one can use anybody part. The passer and the person recieve the hoop can move thier bodies but you can't break hands to get it from their neck to next childs neck. Fist team down the line is the winner.

If you have time you can also do Balloon head. Two per team. Place a balloon between the heads of a team of two. First pair to the finish line without losing thier balloon wins. No using hands.

This should be more than 30 min but if not I have more. These however were the most popular.

When I was a kid (way back in the day), and there was a picnic or some outdoor event, we'd play softball. Actually, some would play softball and others would play whatever games they felt like. The adults had little to do with deciding our activities; they were just there to watch us from the sidelines.

SHIPS AND SAILORS!!!! The junior drill team I coach LOVES this game. It gets 'em moving, listening, working in teams (like the 4 man or rowboat command, etc.) Hysterical to watch. And you can start out yelling the commands slow, but really speed it up.

I love that hoola-hoop game, but when we played that last year one of the moms really let me have it because her DD came home with lice like 2 weeks later and she suggested that I was irresponsible for a. not sanitizing the hoops before they touched each child's head/neck area as they passed the hoola hoop, and b. letting them touch each child's head/neck area. (I thought this was silly, but folks will complain about anything!) The kids however, loved that game.

We also do a whipped cream/bubble gum game which is so much fun, but really messy! (I have packages of wipes available when we do this.) Put all the kids in a line w/ a paper plate. Put a piece of bubble gum in the center of each plate. Have adults walk among the kids and pile up the whipped cream on their plates. Wait for "go" and then using NO HANDS, only faces, they dig into that whipped cream and find that gum. First to blow a bubble wins!

Whatever you do -- have a great time!

The water relay....a large bucket, a large spoon and a quart size milk container. The kids need to fill the spoon from the bucket, run to the container, First one filled to the top wins.

We've had art stations set up complete with glue, glitter, poster paints, etc.

"Slip and Slide" is great fun on a hot day.

The raw egg on the spoon relay race is a big hit. There's something about 3rd graders being fascinated with raw eggs hitting the road.

Limbo contests with fun music.

Make your own Sundaes:9

Have a ball!!

Thanks for the great ideas, everyone!!! I was having so much trouble thinking of "new" stuff to do as I have been room mom for DS1 for the last three years. This gave me some great ideas!!

I'm totally down with "Make Your Own Sundaes" I'm on the Thruway so have the sprinkles ready Ms. Beth! :9 :9

It sounds yummy, doesn't it?! I wish I could, but I am limited as to what treats I can get. There are so many food allergies now. This classroom alone has two kids with peanut allergies (my son included), one who is allergic to tree nuts, one dairy, one egg and one apple allergy. Needless to say, choosing treats for class parties has been a little challenging this year.':)')

I had to organize my company picnic a few years ago. We played this game, that had everyone in hysterics. You put a tennis ball into the toe of one leg of a pair of pantyhose. Tie the hose around the person's waist so the ball hangs down, almost touching the ground. Then you get golf balls and put them on the ground. The player has to hit the golf ball along a course and through the finish line using the tennis ball in the pantyhose, no hands or feet allowed. It's really hard and sooooo funny, because to get the tennis ball moving, you having to swivel your hips around a lot. It might be too frustrating for third graders though ;)
