IKEA CABINETS

Hi,

Has anyone redone their kitchen with cabinets from IKEA. We are thinking of doing this but not sure if IKEA is the best choice. Thanks!

I used some in my kitchen two houses ago. They were fair quality, but I don't think they're going to last forever. Are you thinking of having them install them for you? Cabinets are fussy things to install, particularly the upper ones. And if you have any spaces that aren't standard size, it's sometimes difficult to make stock cabinets work.

Just my $0.02:)

Hi, Rosa!

We redid our kitchen 2 years ago in all Ikea cabinets and we love them and get many compliments on them. Ours are maple but I don't know the style. They had a nice design computer program which helped us select what cabinets we'd need. Come prepared with all your dimensions and don't forget things like where appliances, electrical outlets, windows, etc. are located. They plunk that information into the program and you can see what your layout will look like with the cabinets you've selected.

As a side note about quality. The cabinets are fine - we've had no issues with those. However, we bought dressers and beds for the kids' rooms and the dresser drawers are falling apart.

My husband LOVES Ikea though and they have lots of neat accessories, rugs, etc. CHEAP.

Good luck on your kitchen remodel. I hope I never have to do one again! LOL

We redid our kitchen last year with IKEA cabinets. I may be biased because I grew up with IKEA kitchens (having lived in Sweden and Germany).

Obviously, they have different styles and qualities, I found IKEA kitchens cabinets to be extremely durable. They are really easy to install, you might want to get the DVD at IKEA that gives you step-by-step guidelines as to "How to install". I would get that BEFORE you order the kitchen, so you can decide if you want to install them yourself (my husband and I did the installation ourselves and found it fairly easy). Otherwise, IKEA can refer you to professionals who can do the installation.

We chose the Adel birch cabinets and I just LOVE my new kitchen. So far it has withstood a lot of abuse in my house, I have two boys (6 and 9 years), two large dogs, 3 cats and a messy husband (I guess you get the picture).
I think IKEA cabinets are a good choice, certainly when I also take my overall savings into consideration. We redid the whole kitchen with new flooring, cabinets, appliances and granite countertops, I ended up paying around $12,000 for the whole thing, whereas the Great Indoors, Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. gave quotes between $ 22,000 and $ 31,000 for a similar quality kitchen.

Good luck with your new kitchen!

I like Ikea stuff but I view it as more college like furniture. In my opinion, it is not the durable, quality stuff. However, with that said, we do have a tall and long dresser in our son's room that is Ikea - I like the wood tone but the drawers sometimes get stuck and it is really annoying. The idea is we will change it out once we get a home and he grows a bit older.
