If you own a Boxer dog..??

Hi there,
My two year old boxer boy Cassius woke up this morning with a goopy eye. It is more than sleep and dried up and crusty. He seems fine other than this. What should I do? We run him and he swims in our pool and the canal. Could something like this be the problem? Thanks in advance :) deb

If it is more than the average eye booger(sorry), I would take him to the vet. It sounds like a eye infection.
My boy woke up with one goop filled eye. I knew it was the average eye goober so I took him to the vet. Sure enough it was an eye infection. It's a very simple treatment if you catch it right away. I was told it is more common with boxers who have droopy lower lids. Spring weather, pollen in the air can trigger it.

Hi Cynthia, Thanks for the reply! He is due to go in...so here we go. Weather in Central Valley has been insane! Went from 70 to 98 degrees in two days!! Everyone is feeling the allergies/bad air quality. Makes sense. Thanks again. deb

we have 3 boxers. there really are the best! it sounds like he has an eye infection so just take him to the vet and get some antibiotic drops. my one boxer (baxter) had a real goopy eye once. When we took him to the vet it turned out he had a scratch on his cornea (probably from the cat) and had to get eye oitment and drops. It healed but i'm sure it was very irritating. I hope your boxer is ok. Please keep up posted.

I try to keep track of everyone who has boxers here. I missed that you have 3!!! You are so lucky!!! hugs, slurps, and wiggles to you all!

Another Boxer mom here.

Quick question for you all: Our Boxer suffers horribly with separation anxiety. We've always toyed with the idea of getting him a doggie friend. Do you think this would help him? He's six, so I think he's still young enough to adjust to a puppy since he still acts like a puppy most of the time! :)

Have you considered rescue? A young female around one or two years old. I think boxers do well in pairs. My two act like an old married couple. They sleep together, eat together They have some squabbles- yapping at each other. They really do love each other. I can't imagine living without two. I would like to push it to 3:D

I have a boxer who will be 11 this summer. She has arthritis in her spine and one of her hind legs, but it hasn't bothered her much until recently. For the past couple of months she's been hopping around on 3 legs, and is terribly stiff after laying down for awhile. She takes Rimadyl, and the vet recently put her on an additional medication (can't remember what), but it isn't helping. She's such a trooper!

As for getting a boxer a friend, two years ago we got a mini daschund puppy, and they are the best of buddies!! Our boxer accepted him immediately, and they do everything together. I think he has helped her stay young.

I do need to get some pics up of my buddies:) I think its a great idea to get your boxer a friend. My 3 are like the 3 stoogies. They get along so well and are always together. I agree with looking into boxer rescue. You can find some beautiful dogs on their website.

Okay guys...here is my puppa-love!

Just wanted to get a quick hello and put his pic in my avatar. Yes, Boxers are amazing dogs! We had a wonderful lab-retriever mix named Belle who passed away several years ago. Cassius came to as at 10 weeks old and we are all conspirators of his love.

Got off work early to take him to the vet. Just wanted to thank you boxermama's for your input. I'll check in later~Deb

Awww, Cassius is so beautiful! It looks like he's smiling in that picture!
I love boxer pictures:D

Hope everything goes well at the vet's office. Give Cassius an extra kiss from me:)

Our boxer is a rescue dog. My only hesitancy in doing a rescue again is our dog came with a ton of issues, some of which we still haven't been able to break him of. I also want to get a puppy, just so my kids can have that experience. We got "Bo" when he was over a year old, and my kids never really formed that strong attachment to him like I think they would with a puppy.

Thanks for all the advice. Maybe I'll be posting some puppy pics someday soon. And I'll try checking with some area rescues to see if by chance they have pups!

I completely understand. Hopefully, you will find a puppy in rescue. :) Mercedes was our first puppy.
We tried to rescue the second time around, but my DH was so picky about finding a mate for his little girl. We came very close, we went through the entire screening process and was approved. At the time we tried to rescue our local group was a mess. No one explained anything and they took what seemed like forever to contact us. We became too frustrated with it all and bought Maximus.

I will to rescue the next time around because I know a lot more about the process.

Cassius is back from Vet

A simple eye infection caught early. He only weighs 57 pounds and vet thought I should feed him a cup more of his kibble...Looks great otherwise, but due to the 4 mile runs every other day and swims in the pool he needs more FOOD!

So, boxermamas what treats do you give your boxers to supplement them with?

Cassius loves carrots, plain yogurt, peanut butter and apples. He gets no table scraps...but I'm sure he steals them when we are not around :)

Another pic of Cassius at 1 yr. old...

This is with my daughter....ahhh puppy days.:)

our guys love carrots, apples and air popped pop corn. ours are also in the pool most of the days especially right after a walk. they are so much fun and i can't imagine my life without them. our boxers eat like pigs and probably could stand to lose about 5-10lbs. They are pushing 80lbs and are fat and happy.
