Ahh. Need to gripe, the season has started, alreadyx( ;( We have a 2 story foyer which we loved when we bought the house but it is now a nightmare. There is a huge window in the foyer that is so hard to get to that when my husband tried boarding up for the last hurricanes we almost went to the ER. So I get this company out that does window tinting that protects against 130 mph winds. The estimate for the foyer window, $1800!!!! I budgeted that for the entire front of the house. Oh well back to plywood I guess since we can't get a shutter company out to give us an estimate until next year. Keep your fingers crossed that my husband can stay on the ladder this year:D Hopefully we won't have to break out the plywood. Thanks for letting me vent about the joys of living in beautiful Florida:7

it's amazing what some will charge for simple work. my FIL works for a window company and he believes it should cost no more then $1000 depdning on your window size. i know ppl need to make money and run a business but he really feels that many just try to take advantage of a situation to often, when this should be a time to help.

Hi Candi
I'm from on the Space Coast by the AFB.
I know these companies need to make a profit but it does seem that everyone is taking advantage of a very needy situation these days. Everyone from the gas, insurance and electric companies have significantly increased their charges. And I understand the hurricanes have been devastating to them as well but they keep going up to recover from the past storms but no one is recovering our costs. Our paycheck is especially not keeping up with increased prices so I am forced to put my kids in daycare so I can get a full time job to help out. We were looking at transferring out of state but the problem is that we wouldn't be able to sell our house now. We're between a rock and a hard place.

I understand your concern especially since you're so close to the coast.

I agree that some companies are trying to capitalize on a bad situation. It's not bad enough we go through the hurricane devastation, then you have to deal with people taking advantage.

I'm just hoping things won't be as bad this year :-(

I know they forecasted a bad year but hopefully we get some kind of break:-( Unfortunately if we get a break, someone else gets the bad end of it;( Just keep our fingers crossed.

Hi! I'm on the Space Coast too. I don't know about you but everytime I hear that Weather Channel music my heart starts pounding and I get anxious, like Pavlov's dog! Reading the paper and listening to the forecasts makes me a nervous wreck. We're on Merritt Island but so far have never evacuated. And now I'm running a business from my house so I have to worry about my inventory in addition to my household stuff. We always lose power for at least a week, although I'm not complaining, I'd rather be without power than without a home. I hate hurricane season!!!!! 5 more months to go arrrrggghhhh!!! x(

I live in Pass Christian, MS one of the hardest hit areas by Katrina. We didnt board any of our windows and not a single window was broken. We did however have 20 feet of water get into our house destroying everything. Our neighbors that did board had terrible problems with mold after the storm. We were not allowed back into our neighborhoods/homes to do any work once the national guard got here and that lasted for almost two months. The homes boarded up and dark had mold damage in areas where the water did not even reach.

Bless you.

I have friends and family all over Florida...from Cocoa Beach to Panama to Orlando and I worry constantly. My aunt and uncle are still waiting for completed repairs from last year's hurricane season. But they love Florida and refuse to leave.

Take care of yourself and your family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
