How to post avator image???

Hi all! To those of you who have an avator image on your profile, how did you do it? What is an avator image??? I went to my profile and I see where it says you have to put in a URL for a picture if you don't want to use their avator images (which are pretty silly, I must say!) I'm assuming I can not put a pic that I have sitting on my computer on there since it does not have an URL. I have a pic that I would like to use and it is found at a different website, but when I type in that URL is says "error" when I finish! I'm so confused! Does it only take certain URL's???? Is there a certain server that it prefers to get the images from??? Any help would be great!

Some websites don't allow uploading. You can save the image to a PictureTrail account or another type of pic server and then upload it from there.
