Good source for inexpensive dumbbells?

Hi, All--

I need to get heavier weights!! I've pre-ordered STS, and am not sure what to expect there, but the heaviest dumbbells I have now are 12's and I need to get 15's, 20's, 25's, 30's, and 35's-- that should do for now. I've been frustrated on 4DS by not having heavy enough weights.

WHERE is the best place to get them online-- and not pay a fortune? The ones I have now are just the ugly old hex ones. Is it worth it to buy something else?

If y'all can help me out, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks much! :)

Anything you buy online will cost a fortune for shipping, especially as you increase weight.

I've gotten my heavier weights at Walmart and at Play it Again Sports. I generally think that 50 cents/pound is the best price around, given what I've read around here.

Good luck!

I agree with Amy: if at all possible, try to get them in person (I've gotten up to 40# at Walmart, I also second the Play It Again Sports recommendation). Even if you have to drive to a bigger town 50 miles away, it would probably be worth it to pick up all the weights at once and in person.

Another possibility is to try www.oerformbetter.com . Their shipping costs are very reasonable (and they have sales a few times a year). I've bought kettlebells from them, and was pleasanly surprised at paying only something like $6.95 in shipping (that was before the increase in gas prices, so their shipping charges may have increased).

Okay, there IS a website you can order cheap dumbbells from, and they often have FREE shipping, but I can't for the life of me remember the name of the company. I ordered a set of 20's from them and they were SUPER cheap and shipping was like $6. They are standard hex dumbbells (and no, I don't think there's any reason to get anything else, unless it's important for you to have pretty dumbbells).

I KNOW that someone has posted a link to this website here before, and lots of people bought dumbbells from them. Maybe do a search? I was really happy ordering from them - they shipped really fast and the prices are fantastic.

They offer free shipping on weights VERY frequently. And it looks like they have the deal going on right now too. You just have to buy $50 worth of stuff.

Emily--

THANK YOU!!! I remembered having seen a post about a good online place but I couldn't find it when I searched the forums-- too many hits!

I really appreciate everyone's help! I'm going to check out this place, but it's good to know people have had luck at places like Walmart. I have some good leads, so thanks everyone, and thanks for helping me find this website! I'll keep you all posted on how I do.

Have a great weekend all!

:) Karen

Like Emily said, make sure you get hex dumbbells. Way back when, I got the shiney, round pretty one's and got so tired of chasing after them as they rolled away I had to start all over again ($$) with hex's. Also, you can't use the magnetic platemates (or paceweights) on the round one's so their use is limited.
