Going in for oral surgery tomorrow....

and I am soooo scared!!! I have never been under anesthesia before and am frightened to death about it. I have to have all 4 wisdom teeth removed as one is severly infected. I have been drugged up on Vicodin and absolutely hate it!!!!

I just want to know if what your experiences are with oral surgery and anesthesia?

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth out on the same day, and they were impacted (not showing in the mouth). But, I did not have any infection, nor did I have general anesthesia. Just local anesthesia, which means they get you numb and then go to work. I also had nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas.

Nitrous oxide does not replace any anesthesia. It's just an analgesic. It makes you smile and feel very cooperative. It made it easy to get the injections.

I hope your procedure goes great. It will take a few days to get back to normal. Wait 2 weeks before doing a very strenuous cardio workout- take walks instead until then. I bet you will do fine.

I have never had oral surgery, but I have had surgery. As an adult, three times. My first time the anesthesiologist gave me way too much. I was basically in and out all day. I was able to go home after the about three hours of recovery. That is too long. The other two, especially the last were good. I had no problem coming out and was able to get up and walk around a bit. It's really ok. Try not to be nervous. They are really careful on how much to give you. At worst, you may be a groggy during the day.

I'm sorry you are so scared. I can relate. I had surgery about 4 years ago to remove a lump below my shoulder that was benign. I was so scared of being so sick because I can hardly take any meds without getting sick. Long story short, my nephews graduation party was the day I had my surgery and I appologized to him that I would not be able to come due to surgery that day. I woke up from the anesthesia and felt GREAT! I was a lil' tired at first but within an hour I was fine and went to the party! They were surprised to see me. Of course, my hubby drove and also held me to support me walking just in case but I was fine. You will do super. Post back and let us know how it goes. Thinking of you!!!

Don't you worry! I had all four of my wisdom teeth out at one time, and it was nothing! My face was swollen before hand and I was aching, so it was such a relief to have them out. At least one of them was impacted. I remember sitting in the chair telling them that I felt like I had had a margarita, and the next thing I knew I was waking up. Totally disoriented--I thought they were just about to start, but it was all over.
I had a sort of bad reaction to whatever medication they gave me: got EXTREMELY FREEZING for about 1/2 an hour after I got home, but I was fine after that. Can't remember what the medicine was...sorry

A tip for you: put a small bag of frozen veggies or ice in each cup of a bra or bikini top, and wrap it around your head so that your cheeks are kept cold--just tie the bra on the top of your head! I kept ice on my face for two straight days and had no swelling or pain. It was a breeze.

Actually, I have fond memories of this surgery. Not only was is smooth, painless and easy, but the weekend of my surgery was the weekend I found Cathe's website--5 years ago!!!

Good luck, and again, please don't worry. You'll be just fine!

:)

I had my 4 wisdom teeth pulled when I was 19. I was under anesthsia, had only had 2 impacted and everything went very smooth. I came out fine but wondered who was the poor soul that carried me into the other room! Then my fiance (hubby now) took me for a chocolate marshmallow malt...:)..Then I had oral surgery again when I was about 32. I had a root cancel that got absessed and they had to do surgery to fix that. I actually felt great when I came out, no pain, no problems. I even asked hubby to take me to buy a weight bench...I'd say try not to be nervous, but we usually are. I bet your surgery will go very well, I'll even say a prayer for you...:)...Carole

I had oral surgery and had all 4 of mine pulled (2 were impacted). It was very smooth. After I woke, I went home and slept for a couple of more hours and then I was fine. I had no after effects from the anesthesia!

I understand your being nervous, but you'll be so relieved to have it over with and you'll more then likely have less trouble then you're having now!

Thanks so much for your encouraging words :) They did tell my husband today to stop at the McDonalds after surgery for a shake on the way home. I can't eat or drink anything past 6:00am (surgery is at 2:00), so it should be interesting. Thanks for the tip about working out.....I did Imax 2 yesterday, and of course I miss working out more than anything. I will take it easy for a couple of weeks (it will be a challenge for me).

Jo, I hope you're right about this pain. I have never had so much pain in my life (I'm 38) and almost had an out of body experience it was so bad yesterday. The surgeon told me that the pain of having all 4 teeth removed will be nothing compared to what I am feeling right now. That would be nice.

Wendy, love the tip with the bra! If nothing else it will give hubby a good laugh :) Happy 5 year anniversary by the way.

Well thanks again for your words of support. I will let you all know how it went if I am lucid enough after the surgery.

I'll be thinking about you tomorrow and sending you "pain-free" thoughts. Really, you'll have relief!
Jo

Thanks Bobbi! It's always the fear of the unknown that will get ya. Although this pain almost has me begging for them to take my whole head off!

It was a bit unnerving to have to sign the "anesthesia and you may die" release form. They weren't going to use full anesthesia on me either, but they said this infection is so bad, they won't be able to numb it properly so I need to be knocked out for it.

Thanks for the pain-free thoughts!!
Rhonda

Good luck, i'm sure it will all go smoothly...no worries. I'll be thinking of you and sending you all my ((((hugs)))) xxx

Lets us know how you are

Thank you Wayne :) I appreciate the warm wishes. I am actually going to print this thread because it proves there are wonderful people out there who are giving me the courage to get this done.
