Floor vs standing leg work

Does anyone here just do floor leg work? I danced for twelve years, and consequently I hold & build muscle in my legs like crazy, even just from doing step. I also have an iffy hip, which gets irritated when I do standing leg work and step in the same week. I'm thinking about cutting out standing work altogether, or maybe just doing it once every other week - does this sound like a bad idea?

I don't think that's a bad idea at all. I don't like to do standing leg work because it often hurts my knees. I love floor work and I often really feel it the next day or so. I particularly love outer thigh work when you lie on one side and lift the top leg. Ouch!

I think that as long as you are still working all of the different muscle groups, you should be fine.

There are several things that you get from standing work that you don't get from floor work, especially functionality (working the muscles the way you would use them in real life) and engagement of stablilizing muscles. Also, standing leg work is more efficient, because you are doing compound moves that work several muscles at once (most lower body moves work all the lower body muscles at once, to some extent). To work the same muscles with floor work, you'd have to do several exercises.

For these reasons, I'm not sure I'd give up all standing work, unless you do some other sort of activity to make up for what may be missing.

>What is floor leg work and what is standing leg work?

Floor leg work: leg work done while lying on the floor (adductor lifts, 'hydrant' lifts, etc).

Standing leg work: leg work done while standing (squats, lunges, step-ups, etc.)
