bees... frogs... what next?

We have an ancient (50 years old!) concrete inground pool that has tiles missing, cracks, and a rusty ladder.... it's in dire need of renovation. Well, this summer we've been contending with nature, too. First, the bees decided that our pool would be a great place to build a hive. They kept trying to get into the cracks even though the pool water sloshes in there, too. Today, after working out (christi taylor step/tracey core), I decided to swim, and guess who was in there with me? The cutest frog! My DD and I fished him out and took him to a pond at our local nature center. Just wondering what'll be next? (Oh, the other night, DH was in the pool, and a bat swooped down for a sip!) Gotta love nature!!!!

Maybe a mouse?

I hear ya...we have a inground pool too and have found various critters in it. Last year we had a baby duckling fall in and was scooting around crying for it's mother. I called wildlife rehab because I didn't know what to do. The mother was nowhere in sight and I didn't want the baby to die. They told me to leave it alone and the mother will come back for it. Well, they were right. The mother came back, somehow got the baby out and off they went:)

We keep a solar cover on most the time and that usually helps keep frogs (etc.) out. Never had bees...yikes! Bats are OK cuz they eat mosquitos (sp?) and in MN we have swarms of them.

yep when I was a kid we had a pool and we always found insects and frogs in it. Sadly though if you don't find them fast enough they will be dead. I found it interesting that scorpions seem to survive underwater indefinetly? eek. And I remember seeing bats if we ever went night swimming. good times. ;)
We had an out of ground pool last summer and a colony of ants made a home under the outer rim that was folded a bit. weird!

Ok we hsve been at our house for a year in june and this didn't happen when we lived here but.... We bought our house and have an in ground pool. We called a pool service to show us how to take care of it and when they came to out house they said, " oH we saw this house on tv last year". What? Well apparently..we have a camp ground behind our house and a deer jumped over the privacy fence and landed in our pool. The humane society saved him and all was well. This was before we moved in. We have found bugs and a few frogs but nothing else. :)

I did see a duck on the cover of our pool last winter! I went to get my camera and when I got back it was gone!

When we had a pool, I looked out one day to see this bushy thing sticking out of the skimmer basket intake. I thought it was just a branch, but it was a squirrel who had fallen in and drowned. I was so sad.

I have a friend who had a deer jump the fence and land in their pool! Seems to me the deer was fine, but I think the liner suffered a bit.

I feel for you. That's why I prefer my pond - the fish, frogs, snakes and turtles thrive in their habitat, stay away from the kiddos when they choose to swim (I prefer the chlorinated waters myself), the fish get caught when we fish and we throw them back, there's a water trampoline in the middle, and it's a great environment to teach my kids about the beauty and balance of nature. We even have a HUGE snapping turtle - gotta be 100+ yrs old who travels around. Better to go with nature than to fight her - get rid of the pool - go for a pond (easier said than done I know!) Good luck.

Perhaps Sasquatch can swing by for a visit. Be sure to have a camera handy. The guy who took that had too many margaritas poolside.

This thread is a riot! Thanks for the grin this early Friday am. My coworkers probably think I finally have lost it! :)

We put an in-ground pool in our backyard exactly two years ago and have had a menagerie of stuff ever since. Definitely had the frogs and bugs. We had a duck decide to go swimming in it. A duck laid eggs on the cover then the duck came back with a male duck so we had a family for a while. We've had squirrels decide that the cover was a nice place to hang out.

When we opened it up after the first winter, we had hundreds of dead worms in the bottom of it. That was beyond disgusting!! My husband spent days vacuuming to get them out. Yuck! I wasn't going near it. :p

We too have had bats swoop in although that is a rare occurrence... but still... Eek!

I told my husband that I did not sign on for the wildlife when we agreed to get a pool!
