Anyone ever go to a chiropractor for a shoulder injury?

I'm SO freaked out! Over the weekend (must've been then) I somehow hurt my shoulder and now I have extreme stabbing pain with lateral movement of my left arm. I've been injury-free since I started working out 6 years ago. It's SO upsetting because I'm always careful and don't know how it happened! I'd done Cathe's Timesaver workout (the 38-minute one) with a lot of chest work, didn't feel anything happen, and then whammo! The next day or so I had extreme pain!!!

Long ago (before working out) I'd had a similar pain and went to a directional non-force technique chiropractor (i.e., no bone cracking when they make adjustments) and had gradual, good improvement. Short of not doing any shoulder work, what else should I do here? I'm so BUMMED!

I only have a minute before my daughter wakes up from her nap....
YES YES YES go to a chiro. I have gone to one for years and I can't say enough good, no, great things about them. I too hurt my shoulder a few months ago. I completely took myself off of lifting and let it heal 100 percent. It even hurt to move it in some positions for cardio! I was really mad at myself. If I have time later I'll post more, but for now..call your chiro!

Take my advice: Don't do any more shoulder work right now! It sounds like you might have an impingement that has become inflammed.

This advice is coming from someone who is 4 months post surgery from a total tear of the rotator cuff. I was 2 weeks away from testing for my black belt and was dealing with similar pain. Because of my upcoming exam, I could not take enough time off heal my shoulder. BIG MISTAKE x( My surgeon believes that I had an impingement that became inflammed, led to tendonitis and gradual tearing of the cuff ensued until I took a final blow during a sparring match that tore it completely off the bone.

I would try advil, icing and complete rest for awhile. If it doesn't improve I would consider physical therapy.

One more important note: both my PT and surgeon recommend never doing side laterals as they impinge the tendon at the joint. I will never do them again. Instead, they advise doing them with your arms at 45 degrees from the front(rather than straight out to the side) with thumbs upward.

HTH....good luck

Susanne..I would definitely see a chiro for your shoulder. Also stop doing any weight work that hurts it!! I had bicepital tendonitis once and it did stop me from lifting my arm straight up, so even though it was my bicep there were many shoulder exercises that hurt it. I had been going to a chiro so he would adjust it and I also went to Physical Therapy a few times. Be very careful, as you use your shoulder everyday and do not want any permanent damage...

JJ,

Thanks for sharing your (rather heartbreaking!) story. Being so athletic to be earning a black belt, your total tear really had to be a blow to you. I will definitely take your advice and stop lifting (pretty easy, considering it hurts to even swing the arm in step aerobics!).

Again, thanks for responding. Will you be able to resume training after you've recovered?

Hi, Carole, and thanks for your input. It sounds as if injuries are very common in the workout world; it's just rathering shocking and humbling when you've always been extremely healthy and careful and still it happens to you!

I won't feel safe doing ANY weight work for the time being, so I'll just have to do step like there's no tomorrow so I won't gain weight. I just hope that when I can resume weight work, I won't be too far behind where I was.

Yes, I just went a few weeks ago. I have a pinched nerve and my shoulder was aching so I went. The ache is no longer there and the tingling sensation that runs down my arm is better. Nerve damage takes several weeks to heal. I highly recommend going. I had my doubts, but not anymore. I was alittle freaked out about someone cracking me, but it is not bad at all.

I developed a nerve palsy in my long thoracic nerve while delivering my son. I had almost no strength, could not lift my right arm over my head and I had a weird "winging" appearance to my right scapula. Freaky!

But anyway, I visited an orthopedic doc, who prescribed physical therapy. The PT's massaged, iced and had me do exercises, then the head PT lady did an "adjustment" to my shoulder girdle area. It was excruciating, but it helped so much!

It sounds kind of like what you experienced at the chiro, but with a different approach. Good luck, and hope you get better soon!

Hi Susanne,
I had something similar also and had an MRI done upon request of an orthopedic I saw. I had a small tear but had not damaged my rotator cuff thank goodness. My problem was that I wouldn't stop doing push-up, chest flies etc until it was hurting pretty bad and I couldn't do these things. I started physical therapy (once a wk for 6 wks now) and it has helped tremendously (I didn't think it would). I limit what I do above shoulder level right now. It is such a bummer when you can't do what you know your full potential to be, isn't it? Hang in there and definitely get it checked out.
