Another Pilates ?

Hi Everyone who does Pilates and those who are thinking about it,
I was just wondering what instructor do you like the best, what video or DVD you like the best, which gives you the best results?
Which ones has the best music and the best coaching advice? Whew...that was a mouthful. :D

My doctor today just told me to do Pilates (he didn't say who) in addition to all the weight work and aerobics I do with Cathe. He feels Pilates will help lessen the frequency of my migraines (that are lupus related)...which I have 3-4 times a week. Grrrr

I turn to my friends here at Cathe's for their input, advice and preferences. I've always heard if you want to know the answer to something, go to the best source. So you guys are it. :D
I tried the search engine, but all the info was so scattered around, I got lost in the shuffle.
Great big TIA :p

Hi Wanda
I like Winsor Pilates, I use the Ab sculpting and the buns and thighs, their tough but their good ....... Rhonda :7

I think if you're a beginner at pilates you should try Stott Pilates. Her new matwork video Level 1: The Secret To Flat Abs is fabulous and very detailed. And no, it doesn't only work your abs! You're arms and legs will also get a workout.
Good luck with those awful migraines!!

Wanda, it really depends on what personality you like & how long you want your pilates workouts to last.

Stott workouts are excellent but her video voice is a bit irritating. She gives a lot of information. And I love how she warms up the body before launching into the 100's.

Jennifer Kriess is also a favorite of mine. Like Stott, she gives a lot of instruction. Pilates moves are usually difficult to see so the detailed instruction is essential if irritating. I'm not sure why more people don't list Kriess as a favorite.

Winsor has a lot of fans. Her infomercial is a big turn off IMO. She goes on about the weight loss benefits of Pilates. Mat work does not burn a lot of calories. But maybe the workouts are fine even if the claims are a stretch.

Karen Voight has some pilates inspired workouts. She's bubbly & fun, the workout is fast paced, but she doesn't provide enough instruction. Still it's a good choice if you need some spark.

I have the a.m./p.m pilates video with Ana Caban & someone else. It would be a good intro. The counts are different from my other workouts.

I've read good things about Hillary Burnett & Pilates for Dummies over at VF. Do check over at Video Fitness as there are a lot more Pilates enthusiasts.

Hope this helps. Do you mind sharing how Pilates will help with the lupus migraines?

Debra

Thanks so much for all this valuable information. Maybe I will have to buy one of each. LOL

Debra, I haven't the foggiest idea how Pilates will help my migraines. But my doctor was insistent that I put this into my program. I told him that when I'm feeling half way decent, I work out 2 hours a day all ready. I do weight work and aerobics.
He just said, 'I want you to do Pilates on top of everything else you do.'
I asked if I needed a ball? He just said 'no you just need a mat. You can find videos at Barnes and Nobels' That's all he said!!!!
So...I'll do Pilates but I just needed some imput on where to start.

I know we do part of that 100 count thing, in the first part of the ab work in Cardio Weights. I can do that with ease. And the last move of the ab work in Kickbox, where you balance with arms outstretched with your knees up in the air...I can do that okay.

Also there is a move where you are doing a sit up but your arms and legs are going in opposite directions, it is in Cardio and Weights and also in Muscle Endurance sit ups, I can do that move okay as well.
I don't know where this puts me in the Pilates level. Probably pretty much at the very beginning, right? LOL I see the wisdom in getting a tape that explains what I'm supposed to be doing. :p

Thanks again, everyone for your input.

Sounds like your core is strong. I'd still start with a beginner workout to learn the breathing, the tilts, spinal alignment, etc. You'll progress quickly.

Interesting advice from your doctor. Lots of reasons to do Pilates but migraine mitigation is a new one! Please let us know if it helps!

Debra

Hi Everyone,
Well I went shopping. :D I have 3 Jennifer Kries, one Stotts level 1,
a Karen Voight Core tape. I couldn't find any Windsor, but will look on line.
I couldn't believe Blockbuster videos no longer carries exercise videos. Our local Barnes and Nobels only had 3 DVD's! Good grief!!! Good old Target and Walmart..you can always count on them. Hey that's a commercial, right? LOL

Do any of you girls like Janis Saffell's Brand New Butt Plus Pilates?
